How to Expand Your PS5 Storage Without Sacrificing Performance

middleportal.com – The PlayStation 5 is a powerful console that offers stunning graphics, fast loading times, and immersive gameplay. However, it also comes with a limited amount of internal storage space, which can quickly fill up with the large size of modern games.

If you are running out of space on your PS5, you might be wondering how to expand your storage without compromising your gaming experience.

One option is to use an external hard drive or solid state drive (SSD) that connects to the USB port on the back of the PS5. This will allow you to store and play PS4 games, as well as move PS5 games to and from the external drive. However, this method has some drawbacks, such as slower loading times, reduced performance, and potential compatibility issues. Moreover, you cannot play PS5 games directly from the external drive, as they require the fast speed of the internal SSD.

A better option is to install an additional SSD inside the PS5, using the empty slot that is designed for this purpose. This will increase your internal storage space by up to 4 TB, and enable you to play both PS4 and PS5 games with optimal performance.

However, not any SSD will work with the PS5, as it has to meet certain specifications and requirements. According to Sony, the SSD you choose must:

  • Use PCIe Gen4 x4
  • Be between 250 GB and 4 TB in size
  • Have a form factor type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110
  • Use Socket 3 (Key M)
  • Be only 22 mm wide (25 mm won’t fit)
  • Be 30 mm, 42 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm, or 110 mm in length
  • Be fitted with a cooling structure, like a heatsink
  • Not exceed 110 mm in length, 25 mm in width, and 11.25 mm in height with the heatsink attached

If you are not sure which SSD to buy, you can check out some of the recommended models that have been tested and verified by Sony or other users. Some examples are:

  • Samsung 980 PRO SSD
  • Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 SSD
  • Seagate FireCuda 530 SSD
  • Corsair Force MP600 SSD
  • Crucial P5 Plus SSD

Once you have your SSD, you will need to install it in your PS5 by following these steps:

  1. Turn off your PS5 and unplug the power cord
  2. Remove the base and the side panel of the PS5
  3. Unscrew and remove the cover of the SSD slot
  4. Insert the SSD into the slot and secure it with the screw
  5. Replace the cover, the side panel, and the base of the PS5
  6. Plug in the power cord and turn on your PS5
  7. Format the SSD in the Settings menu

After completing these steps, you should be able to enjoy more storage space on your PS5 and play your games with the best performance possible.
